Benefits of Massage Therapy for Children

Everyone can benefit from having massages on a regular basis. This includes children of all ages. Recently, massage therapy has grown in popularity as an alternative method of treatment. However, in the younger individuals, such as infants and children they seem to reap the benefits of touch therapy. Among the benefits for children is a more restful sleep.

Infants that are suffering from medical problems have been known to get relief in many ways from touch therapy. They feel nurtured when they are undergoing the therapy. It is also very common for children to also show an improvement from touch therapy when they are suffering from physical ailments. Many caregivers of young children undergoing massage therapy have noticed a change in the sleeping habits, and overall attitude of the child. Generally, the child having massage therapy seems to be more relaxed and calmer than they were prior to the treatment.

Touch therapy and massage therapy have many similarities. This is mainly because they are both done with the hands. Generally, the movements of the hands over the infants body is the main technique used. Typically, the therapist can use a combination of massaging and stroking of the infants body. With children, the therapy is relaxing an not at all painful.

The main concept behind infant massage therapy is the skin on skin contact. At home the mother of father of the baby can simulate the therapy by simply holding the child on a bare chest. In order for this to work, the child will need to also have a bare chest. Another way the therapy can be used at home is by holding the infants hand, or rubbing his or her arms after a diaper change. For some more severe cases, a therapist might visit with a child in the hospital to do the therapy. Infant massage and touch therapy has become a recognized treatment in the medical profession, and in 1986 The International Infant Massage Therapy Association was founded.

It is very common nowadays to notice a nurse giving a newly delivered child massage therapy. It is even quite easy to find a nurse to give your child a massage just after delivery. This can be a very useful option to take advantage of in the event there is a medical or physical issue at the time of delivery. This technique is done to calm the newborn as the doctors or other medical professionals are treating the condition.

Not only does the child receiving the massage therapy benefit, the caregivers of the child can also benefit. The adults in charge of the care of the child can catch up on some sleep, and just relax, because the child is more relaxed. Children that have massage therapy done are known to sleep much better. This could be because massage therapy has been known for eliminating headaches, colic, and stress. When a child is relieved of some of the troublesome conditions everyone in their surrounding environment and also benefit.
