First Time Massage Expectations

If you are planning on going to a massage therapist for the first time, it is completely normal to have some questions and concerns. Many people are often a little concerned about what happens during a massage, what they are allowed to wear during the massage among other things of that nature. Going to a massage therapist should be a comfortable and relaxing experience every time.

It is typical for a massage therapist to question your overall health on the first visit. This is to help them in determining the best course of treatment for your needs. Knowing about your medical history and your current medical conditions can also keep the therapist from doing a procedure that could be uncomfortable for you or even hurt you. Knowing how you are feeling on that particular day will help the therapist treat your troublesome areas and target parts of your body that are in need of attention.

Generally the therapist will help you to understand the procedure they are about to do. Often they will discuss the procedure with you as they are doing it. This is usually an attempt to not only keep the individual receiving the therapy informed but to also help in making them feel comfortable. It is also normal for the therapists to ask the client if they have a preference of fragrance, oils and lotions.

Another popular concern among those that are new to the massage therapy treatment is undressing. It is not necessary, however fully exposing the area that is going to be treated can often make the treatment easier and more effective. If you do choose to not have your clothes on, generally the areas of your body that are not being treated will be covered with a sheet.

If you are going for a Swedish massage, you can expect to be asked to lay on a massage table. Massage tables are designed specifically for the comfort of individuals during a massage. The tables are padded and can typically be put into different positions in order to achieve comfort for virtually everyone.

Depending on the length of time that is allotted for your massage you can expect to have some wonderful scented oils, lit candles and even soothing music to be played during your session. The option of oil is usually done to prevent any discomfort during the massage. The oil lubricates the skin, thus eliminating the friction that can be caused by the hands of the massage therapist and the client. However, whether you request to have oil or if it is suggested by the therapist, you should ask at the end of your massage to have assistance in removing the oil from your body. Many oils can stain clothing.

You should always feel comfortable having a massage done. If you are not comfortable with the environment, therapist or just your position be sure to let them know. Sometimes it is possible to feel uncomfortable with an individual even if nothing has been done to cause it. You can request a new therapist if you feel that would be the best option for you. If there is anything you think your therapist can do to make your massage a little better for you, be sure to let them know.
